LOCATION Memphis, TN
PROJECT COST $400,000
COMPLETION DATE August 1999
Phase I of the Bartlett Station Improvements was to establish a commercial/office sector that complements and defines the historic center. Once the project is implemented , it is envisioned that this special
use district will become the recognizable center of the community.
ETI Corporation designed the key components of Phase I including street plantings, pedestrian system, and historic lighting. The
clear designation of a pedestrian route is planned for the district. This route is slightly elevated above the street level and lined with trees reinforcing the course. The pavement
material, concrete, is compatible with existing elements and is complementary to the street character. This pavement type offered flexibility in the use of texture and scoring options. In
addition, the tactile delineation at crosswalks informs disabled users.
Street trees were considered the most prominent positive influence in the determination of the street character.
Planned plantings reinforce the street edge while providing a sense of formality, stability, and tradition within the special use district. Historic
lighting fixtures were chosen to emphasize intersections and specific details. The overall lighting plan reflects a hierarchy of type and intensity applicable for the variety of needs.
To better understand and focus on the needs of the community and local governmental officials for improvements to Bartlett Station, ETI developed
a design team that not only included design professionals, but also City of Bartlett representatives and a citizens group.
