ETI Corporation was the lead firm in the design of a 106-acre tract for the development of the Hickory Hill Community Center and Park in Shelby County, Tennessee. To meet the needs of
the community and the requirements set forth by the City of Memphis, ETI assembled a multi-disciplined team of planners, architects, and engineers to design and develop the site. ETI developed the master plan as envisioned by the community, while balancing a blend of active recreational facilities with passive uses. The master plan includes a community center, 60-acre park, school, police station, hiking trails, ballfields, and other recreational uses. The community center, approximately 64,000 square feet, is located just west of the center of the site on a high point that overlooks a large open play area to the south and east. Due to location, the community center is the focal point of the entire development and allows for easy access from Ridgeway Road. By incorporating existing conditions on the site into the master plan, ETI utilized an existing gravel pit for storm water detention, and helped maintain pragmatic development costs. The gravel pit, located in the northeast corner of the site, serves as a dry, storm water detention basin that will not only temporarily hold the excess site runoff from a large storm, but also minimizes some of the drainage problems in the neighborhood. Two existing drainage swales are diverted through the two-part detention basin. The steep existing side slopes are graded to a more gradual slope and the entire basin area is seeded to become a wildflower and grassy meadow.
