PROJECT COST $340,000 (Phases I and II)
COMPLETION DATE Fall 2000
Utilizing the recommendations set in the Shelby Farms Trails Master Plan report prepared by ETI Corporation for Shelby County Government, ETI prepared construction documents for the design and construction of approximately 9 miles of paved multiuse trails. Prepared as one set of construction documents, the package allowed for construction of the trail in 3 phases. A variety of detailed trail cross sections were designed to accommodate construction of the
trail over various, specific existing conditions within the park, i.e., existing gravel roads, existing dirt roads, abandoned railroad beds, and undeveloped cut and fill sites. These different cross sections were required so the contract could be bid as a unit prices basis, as the exact trail alignment was not set until after the contractor had staked and approximate trail centerline field adjustments approved as requested by the designer and owner. An observation noted from the trail use after construction, was that in the future, consideration should be given to increasing the trail width from 8-foot to 10-foot to better accommodate maintenance and security vehicles.
